Brisbane, Australia
I landed in Brisbane after two long flights from the United States with just 20 hours to spare before I flew on to New Zealand. I got in too late to do any exploring so I found my hostel, grabbed a sausage and fries from the nearby frank stand and headed to bed.
The next day I dove right in to Australian culture. I tried Vegemite for the first time. Wow. It is such a strong flavor right off the bat. Offensive is the word that comes to mind but at the same time I see how people could like it. Vegemite is a brown paste made from yeast and used frequently as a spread on toast. I’m glad I tried it, but don’t look for me to become a frequent user!
Farmers market!!! I was all smiles when I happened upon a farmer’s market in the center of Brisbane. I was in search of lunch and passed up a couple of promising places holding out that I would find something especially unique. The area was abustle as I passed the old treasury building and knew I had found something that would hit the spot. The market was very similar to what one would find in the States, except with way more choices of cuisine. I ended up choosing a great veggie sandwich from the Turkish food stand.
I hadn’t heard the best things about Brizzy before my visit, but I have to say, in my very short visit it was enjoyable. Here is a quick video update. Sorry about the audio, it was really windy!
